Awareness Committee
Seeks to increase the public's knowledge of health literacy issues. Created a community presentation to encourage people to be more active partners in their own healthcare. Grant money was received to assist with the distribution of the this presentation throughout the state in late 2011-2012 using a "Train Trainers" format. Meetings are held 5-6 times per year at various locations or via conference call.
Main purpose is to spread the word about health literacy through media channels, including both mainstream media and social media.
Focuses on the provider community, both those currently in practice and those in training. Activities are designed to heighten awareness of health literacy as a determinant of patient outcomes and community health and to provide practical guidance in addressing the needs of patients for whom health literacy is an issue. Produced the professional continuing education program, "Health Literacy 101" through CE Central this year: http://www.cecentral.com/activity/2731.
Addresses patient/provider communication issues in hospital settings, private practices, pharmacies and public health departments through the promotion of evidenced-based practices and "plain language forms." Assists with educating communities/stakeholders on health literacy. Meets 5-6 times a year from 10:30 AM to 3 PM, ET at the Kentucky Hospital Association in Louisville.
This committee is working on the following activities for 2011-2012:
- Creating a site for academics to review latest health literacy research.
- Finding information on past and current health literacy projects in Kentucky.
- Managing the call for proposals for posters and presentations for the 2012 Summit.
- Arranging for selection of the winning poster session at the 2012 Summit.
Advances the work of HLK through consultation with the Executive Committee and review of progress reports from the HLK committees. Has more than 30 members statewide. Quarterly meetings are held at various locations or via conference call. The HLK Executive Committee oversees the Steering Committee. A sub-committee organizes the annual Summit.
